Neighbors with DisabilitiesAccording to the National Institutes of Health, “ About one in every five people in the United States has a disability. Some people are born with a disability. Some get sick or have an accident that results in a disability. Some people develop disabilities as they age. Almost all of us will have a disability at some point.” Tragically, one of Steve’s family members suffered a spinal cord injury within the past year – a young child who is now a quadriplegic. Steve has seen first hand the pain that people with disabilities face – from access problems to stares. Regardless of the origin of the disability, Steve believes it is of paramount importance that all people have equal access to their government and its services. As a Councilmember, Steve pledges to advocate for: More affordable housing, in some cases known as Moderately Priced Dwelling Units (“MPDUs”), and prioritize persons with disabilities for those units. Work with State leaders, and impress upon them that Montgomery County no longer offers in-patient mental health care for persons without insurance, and stress the need for such care. Cutting the red tape that plagues families who attempt to have the School System provide necessary care for children with disabilities. Too often parents are given the brush-off by the School System. They are forced to hire advocates to lobby the School System for services. These services are funded by our tax dollars and parents should not have to hire specialists to obtain them.
