Neighbors Living in PovertyMany County residents are unaware that people may be living in poverty only a short distance from their homes. Likewise, some children arrive at school without lunch, adequate clothes, or in some cases, without having an opportunity to eat breakfast. Montgomery County is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation and is well positioned to help our neediest neighbors, people who sometimes find themselves trapped in a downward spiral, without a safety net. The current mortgage crisis underscores the reality that people’s standard of living can change overnight, and it is vital that we treat our neighbors as we would want to be treated. As a Councilmember, Steve will: Advocate for delivery of subsidized services in such a way as to protect people’s dignity and privacy. Provide alternatives to homeless shelters for families with children, beginning with childcare alternatives. Advocate for low-income housing situated near public transit. Offer public/private partnership possibilities to provide job training and mentoring.
