Domestic ViolenceDomestic violence affects twenty-five percent of the population in Montgomery County and is deadly - resulting in five deaths last year. Statistics also show that many of the people in our prisons have witnessed domestic violence and that domestic violence perpetuates itself through the generations. Steve Kanstoroom has a long history of advocating for victims of domestic violence by supporting the Montgomery County Abused Persons Program and the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence - the state-wide coalition of domestic violence programs. On the Council, Steve will advocate for: Continued support for existing services. Montgomery County currently has in place broad and comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence. No-cost and low-cost public awareness campaigns aimed at prevention and safety. Ride-On busses, the County's cable channel, and existing County mailings, such as inserts and messages in County mailings, can be used to strengthen the existing domesic violence public awareness campaign. It is especially important that our youth and teens know the warning signs of domestic violence. Support for cutting edge endeavor. The County is in the process of setting up the Family Justice Center. This comprehensive center will provide access to the state's attorney's office, sherrif's department and health and human services. Victims will be able to obtain protective orders without having to make special trips which are often very difficult under the circumstances. Victims will also be able to get help for their children and learn of emergency housing. Steve would like to know your thoughts on these issues. Click here to share them with him. Donate Now
