About Steve

A lifetime County resident, 50 year old Steve met his wife, Susan Mize, at Northwood High School. They both grew up in the Silver Spring/Wheaton area and Steve operated his Computer Systems business, Varidyne Corporation, there for many years before retiring in 2003.

Susan worked for eight years as a therapist at the County’s domestic violence program, the Abused Person's Program, and then as the Director of the Maryland's statewide coalition of domestic violence programs - the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence. The couple has two daughters, a 2nd grader and entering kindergartner, at Sherwood Elementary School in Sandy Spring. Susan’s primary focuses now are her children and managing the family home.

Steve and Susan have long histories of volunteer service and Susan currently serves as the Vice Chair on the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council and Steve, on the Department of Permitting Services Advisory Committee, both County Government Committees.

Steve has a long history of standing up to entrenched bureaucracies and effectively bring about lasting change. Click here to see some of Steve's work in helping thousands of disaster victims obtain the insurance proceeds and disaster benefits for which they were wrongfully denied.

A little about Steve's business background.

Retired from his successful computer systems business after 22 years, Steve has the energy, experience and fresh vision to tackle current County problems.

He founded his company, Varidyne Corporation in 1978 to market a patent that he developed to save mechanical energy. Soon after, his company soon started excelling in computer services.

In the 1980s, Varidyne landed subcontracts to process data for the Department of Justice and Department of Labor. Next, Steve developed software to bring efficiencies to some of the largest corporations in the country, serving millions of customers and handling billions of dollars. Steve's expertise is in eliminating inefficiencies, waste and fraud, and increasing efficiencies and productivity.

In the 1990s Steve developed systems to detect waste and fraud from among billions of records, real-time.

A Little about Steve's Community Service

Since 2003, Steve began advocating for Maryland flood victims left homeless by Tropical Storm Isabel. He subsequently helped thousands obtain insurance proceeds and FEMA benefits for which they were wrongfully denied. His exhaustive investigation of FEMA led to his participation in numerous Congressional hearings before and after Katrina.

Locally, Steve discovered and halted a commercial illegal dumping operation in Ashton, halted illegal forest clearing and zoning infringements, and has been advocating for Sandy Spring families who wrongfully lost access to their properties when Park and Planning erased the record of their 100 year old road.

Steve is currently serving on the Department of Permitting Services Advisory Committee, a Montgomery County Board striving to improve adherence to County building regulations and improve permitting services. Click here to see his subcommittee's recent report to the County Executive.

He is also actively working with the Sherwood PTA to secure the promised addition to this overcrowded school.
